“The man answered, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.'” (Luke 10:27)
I admit it, I cheated a bit here. Because this, in a nutshell is what being a Christian is all about. It’s not about the worship songs (although they’re important). It’s not about the fancy clothes on a Sunday. It’s not about the building (unless the church is of some historical interest).
It’s as simple as this: Love God and love your neighbour.
The man who is speaking here is quoting scripture to Jesus, who knows all this already. But Jesus adds that if we do this, we will live! And the implication is that we will live spiritually.
And the man goes on: who is my neighbour? Jesus answers with the story of the Good Samaritan. In short, your neighbour is anyone who needs help and receives it from you. It’s not about who lives next door to you. Although if they need a good deed doing, and you do it then… Well you get the idea!
