“‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus asked him. ‘Only God is truly good.'” (Luke 18:19)
I don’t know why this verse jumped out at me tonight. I was hoping that I could take the easy way out and quote Proverbs. I’m very tired and don’t feel strong enough for a deep discussion.
But it seems that God has other ideas.
I think it’s the thought that Jesus seems to be describing himself as someone who is NOT truly good. How can this be? We think of Jesus as one who is without fault. Someone who is pure.
And yet, here he is apparently saying that this is not the case. Something that seemed so certain to us is put into doubt.
As we stand on the threshold of Good Friday, it is troubling to start to think that Jesus is not all good.
