“So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program.” (Acts of the Apostles 6:2 NLT)
This is a bit awkward. Do we neatly catalogue this verse under “Ones which don’t fit with our modern way of life”?
Or shall we try to unpack it a bit?
Did the disciples always get everything right? No, of course not. They were human, they made mistakes.
But even then it doesn’t quite sit right. However, If you read this in context, it’s all about how the disciples are starting to splinter into different groups. The leaders, the Apostles, are desperate to bring everyone back together again. And they do that by setting aside the distractions and focussing on what really matters to them at that point.
Yes, feed the poor with food. But anyone can do that. Only Christians can feed people with the Holy Spirit.
