“This is what I told them: ‘Obey me, and I will be your God, and you will be my people. Do everything as I say, and all will be well!’ “But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward.” (Jeremiah 7:23-24 NLT)
Islamic State are following the desires of their own evil hearts. This is not what God wanted. The needless killing of innocent lives by people who claim to be doing the will of God (Allah) is only going to end with them going backwards.
Already the nation which they claim to be working for has seen historical treasures destroyed. It’s economy is in tatters. It’s people are divided and afraid.
In these times of global homogenisation, a blending and mixing of the best and strongest of all nations, the chaff is rising to the surface. To use another Biblical metaphor, it will be separated from the wheat and burned in the fire.
I am convinced that the future of this world will be one of peace and cooperation.
But the winnowing process will be a painful time for everyone.
Meanwhile the families who are grieving the death of those beautiful souls can take some comfort from knowing that God has called home those whose purpose has been fulfilled. For them, the time of hard work is over and they can rest at last.
For us who are left, the work is getting harder as organisations like Islamic State find it so difficult to accept others because of their differences. It will be our job now to try and carry on the good work already begun and not to get disheartened by the size of the task.
